AHuntersAngel_w6861_750I’m offering an excerpt from A Hunter’s Angel (book 1 of the Hunter’s Daggers), showcasing vampire Ian McHenry…The 438 year old hunter who searches for his own kind and destroys those who prey upon humans. As an Agent in Charge, he and his FBI team are in Clayton, Pennsylvania, to track down a vicious serial killer, who Ian knows is a vampire he’s hunted for over a hundred years—his very own brother.

 ___________________________________________

Is he a heartbreaker? What do you think?

“I wish you wouldn’t make yourself so public, especially not with him.”

She whirled and brought the brush up as if it were a club. Ian stood behind her and shoved his hands into the pockets of his jacket. Snowflakes clung to the black curls around his ears. The harsh glow from the parking lot lighting did nothing to hide the bleak set of his face.

She lowered the brush, but didn’t lessen her death grip on the plastic handle. Her words sizzled with acid. “You’ve got to be kidding me.”

Ian flinched and briefly closed his eyes. His countenance melted into what may have been regret. It was too damned late for regret. “I’m sorry, Grace. I’m truly sorry I’ve hurt you. I didn’t mean for it to happen. I shouldn’t have allowed any of it to happen.”

He swallowed hard enough to make his throat move and his voice gruff. “Brad isn’t right for you, but that isn’t why I wish you wouldn’t go out with him right now.”

She stared at him, unsure of what to make of his apology. In her heart, she wanted him to tell her not to go out with Brad because he still cared. “Why the hell not?”

Ian shifted a few steps closer. It was as if he glided over the snow, so fluid was the movement. “It’s simple, Grace. We’re dealing with a dangerous murderer here. I have a feeling he follows the investigations closely, much closer than Jeffrey Cavanaugh did.” He paused and looked toward the dark mountain, looming over the town in the east. After a second, his gaze connected with hers, more intense than before. “Grace, you’re not an amateur detective. You’re jeopardizing the case by making yourself a target. Don’t you see?”

His reason had nothing to do with whether or not he had feelings for her, but was about the case. She shook her head. A terrible pain exploded through her heart and echoed in the empty space with each difficult breath. Afraid she’d fall apart, Grace fisted her free hand over her chest. She gasped in the cold air and fought the urge to run. “No, I don’t see. I don’t fit the victim profile, Ian. And I’m not stupid. I hardly think the killer will attack while I’m with Brad. Besides, I’m a police chief, for the love of God! I can take care of myself.”

“I just think you should be careful. I have a bad feeling about this. I don’t want to see you hurt.” His low voice bounced off the sides of the crater where her heart had been.

“What the hell is your problem? You say Brad’s not good for me!” She glared at him, and her voice rose as she spoke. “Who gives you the right to determine that?” He winced and reached toward her, but she backed away and didn’t give him time to answer. She needed to get this out of her system more than she needed to hear his answers.

“You sure as hell weren’t good for me. You left me! You don’t want me hurt? Too fucking late for that, Ian. I remember the night we had. I remember what I said to you, and I remember what you said to me. You already had me. Why did you lie to me if it was only sex? Why did you make me fall in love with you only to throw me away?” She stopped, horror filled her, not only had she told him too much, let too much of her pain and emotions out, she was also crying. Grace never cried and despised the weakness almost as much as she hated him. She wiped at the tears with the back of her hand. “Damn you!”

 New Year’s Memories

My favorite New Year’s Day memory comes from my teenage years. I grew up on a farm and with a grandmother who loved to bake. She could make just about anything and never used a written recipes. I inherited Granma’s knack for cooking without following a written recipe. She was also the storyteller in the family, so I guess I got that from her, too.

But I digress. My favorite memory happened one New Year’s Eve when Grandma and my mom and aunt decided to bake pies for the next day. It was already late afternoon, but it didn’t seem to matter. The four of us ended up ringing in the New Year having a blast baking pies.

I don’t remember the final pie count, but it was probably something like ten pies—pumpkin, apple, and cherry. A few of them were kept for the big traditional pork and sauerkraut dinner the next day and the rest were frozen for Sunday dinners at Grandma’s later in the year.

Do you have any fun memories of New Year’s Day past?

Have a fantastic 2013!

A Hunter’s Blade

Available Everywhere January 2 from The Wild Rose Press.

“Great paranormal Romance!” WiLove Books Book Reviews

BLURB:

Brigit Wolfe, a born werewolf, hasn’t killed a human in over a hundred years, although now, she wonders if the animal attacking people in Silver Creek, Colorado, isn’t her. But she might have bigger problems when her cowboy neighbor, Austin Calhoun, ambles into her bar. Austin hasn’t been a vampire for long, but he is determined to prove to himself that he’s worthy of his hunter’s dagger. Brigit’s rare beauty and blade-sharp tongue enchants him. She ignites a passion he thought was dead, but is she the killer his master sent him to destroy? During Austin’s investigation regarding Brigit’s involvement in the deaths, an old crime surfaces connected to her human best friend. These two immortal enemies have to join forces to solve the mystery before someone else dies. But can they survive the heat of their own desire?

EXCERPT:

She stopped in front of him and growled, “Let’s get something established about werewolves. There are two kinds. The lesser wolves who are made. And the Lykan who are born. I’m not one of the degenerates. I was born a Lykan in 1647. The first child of Valeriu and Elena. I’m an alpha and you are nothing more than a fledgling just hatched.”

He broke free of her power by drawing on his own. When he moved toward her, Austin held his hands to his side, ready to grab the hunter’s dagger sheathed inside his jacket. His fangs had long ago descended ready for a fight. “I don’t really give a flying fuck whether you were made, born, or hatched.”

When the energy of Brigit’s power touched him again, he pulled the silver blade. “I want to know if you’re the one preying on these people.”

Her eyes widened and she backed up a step as he approached. “I told you I didn’t attack those humans. I haven’t killed a mortal in over a hundred years. How many innocents have you snacked on tonight? How many of them did you want to kill?”

“I don’t hurt my prey,” he said through clenched teeth. He’d never let her know battling the beast within every feeding was the hardest thing he’d ever done. “If you didn’t kill those people then you have nothing to worry about. Best way to figure out who did is by working together.” He put the sliver blade away, and his fangs retracted.

“What do you have planned?”

Austin didn’t miss the slight quiver in her voice. “We begin with you telling me everything you remember from those nights you became the big, bad wolf.”

One of my favorite things about the Christmas season is catching up on some of my favorite holiday movies.  Here are my top five.

5—A Christmas Romance, TV-1994, Olivia Newton-John and Gregory Harrison

4—The Santa Clause, 1994, Tim Allen

3— It’s a Wonderful Life, 1946, Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed

2—A Christmas Carol, TV-1984, George C. Scott

1—National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, 1989, Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo

Actually number 1 and 2 are almost tied. I had a hard time deciding which one I liked more… But in the end Chevy Chase’s antics won over George C. Scott’s amazing acting ability.

So, what’s your favorite Christmas movie?

One of my favorite things about Autumn is the food. I love apple pie, apple cider, apple fritters, apple butter… Can you tell I love apples–especially if they are smothered in butter, brown sugar and cinnamon?
.
I also love pumpkin.  In fact, I’m not sure which I love more, apple pie or pumpkin…LOL.
.
I’m going to share one of my original favorite recipes for Apple Pie.  I developed this recipe over the years and it has become a family favorite. I visit my dad and stepmom for Thanksgiving every year and always bring pies made totally from scratch, and using recipes I’ve either developed on my own or have been passed down from my grandmother.

Sara’s Caramel Pecan Apple Pie

The Witch of Westgate…

I’m a huge fan of Halloween. I love to dress up as a witch and hand out candy from a large black cauldron on my front porch, which I decorate with all sorts of spooky things.

I live in a large housing development called Westgate and usually have anywhere from 150 to 200 Trick or Treaters from 6pm to 8pm on Halloween night. I love the faces of the little kids as they stare at my giant wolf spider hanging down from the corner over the sidewalk, not sure if the piece of candy I’m offering is worth coming up those steps.

Ghosts and a vampire bat sway in the breeze, scary music plays, while I sit on the darkened porch with the “cooking” cauldron of candy beside me. I achieve the fire by using orange “Christmas” lights and white quilt batting tangled around sticks.

They usually brave the spider, the ghosts and creepy sounds to get their Hershey bar. But as they turn to leave, the child-sized skeleton with rats still gnawing on his fingers and webs of spiders entwined over him sitting on small bench is a warning of what will happen if they decide to trick this witch.

I’ve never been tricked. Of course, I could always use a new skeleton….

Do you dress up to hand out candy during Trick or Treat?

A Hunter’s Angel, Book 1 of The Hunter’s Dagger Series

Blurb:

The serial killer stalking Clayton, Pennsylvania, isn’t all that has Chief of Police Grace Wallace worried. For a year, she’s tried to forget Special Agent Ian McHenry and now he’s the expert the FBI sent to catch the killer. She can’t stay away from him, but something primal is telling her to run to save much more than just her heart. Despite the strict code of ethics Ian vowed to follow as a vampire hunter, he craves Grace’s blood above all others. If he chooses to stay, Ian risks losing his chance at divine forgiveness. But if he leaves Grace unprotected from the evil he’s hunted for over a century, he loses more than just his soul…

Excerpt:

I’m not a man.”

“But you were once.”

“Yes, once.” His fingers lingered over her pulse. Her heart raced under his touch.

“Do you still want my blood?” Ian stepped away and locked his wide-eyed gaze onto hers.

“No, I don’t want your blood. Oh, God, I still crave it. You have the sweetest I’ve ever had, but I will never hurt you again.”

She didn’t know what possessed her to do so, but she whispered, “You can take…some of it.”

He closed his eyes, and when he opened them, he acidly said, “No, Grace. I can never taste your blood again. It would kill you.”

She stepped away, and for a moment, she considered telling him to leave. How did she know any of this was real? Did she really believe him? He was sucking her into his insanity.

“Maybe I should go?” Ian backed away another step.  “Goodbye, my sweet angel.”

His jagged murmur ripped at her soul as his eyes took on a blazing intensity and snared hers. She felt a pressure in her mind, and she knew what he intended to do. He wanted to erase her memories of him.

When the energy of her power touched him again, he pulled the knife, and the silver blade caught the dim light of the fire in the hearth when he opened the long switchblade. “I want to know if you’re the one preying on these people.”

Her eyes widened and she backed up a step as he approached. “I told you I didn’t attack those humans. I haven’t killed a mortal in over a hundred years. How many innocents have you snacked on tonight? How many of them did you want to kill?”

“I don’t hurt my prey,” he said through clenched teeth and held her icy gaze. He’d never let her know battling the beast within every feeding was the hardest thing he’d ever done.

Best way to figure out who did is by working together.” He put the silver blade away, and his fangs retracted.

“What do you have planned?” He didn’t miss the slight quiver in her voice. He should finish all this right here and now so he could get back to Ireland and whatever life he’d scraped together, but something needled him into doing a thorough investigation.

The topic of the weekend’s hop is Alpha Heroes and I decided to have my favorite alphas sit down and talk to me today.

I’m talking to vampires, Ian McHenry from A Hunter’s Angel and Austin Calhoun from A Hunter’s Blade here on Cera’s blog. And the heroes of my upcoming contemporary Westerns—Special Forces Commander-turned-cowboy Dylan Quinn from Gambling On A Secret,  country music superstar Seth Kendall from Heartstrings, and Sheriff Zack Cartwright from newly contracted Gambling On A Heart over on Sara’s blog… So, make sure you hop over there, too, for a chance at more awesome prizes.

Cera:  Thanks for coming by to talk to my blog readers this weekend, gentleman. Let’s start with Ian from A Hunter’s Angel. How do you feel your long history and all the events you’ve encountered has made you a text book alpha hero?

Austin: *laughs and slaps Ian on the shoulder* Can’t wait to hear this one.

Ian: *raises his brow at Austin* Your turn is coming. *smiles at me* There isn’t much I haven’t done or seen in my 439 years—most of which I’m not proud of. I wouldn’t call myself a hero of any kind.

Cera: Indulge me and my readers, if you will. Trust me; you’re an alpha hero.

Austin: If you say so.

Ian: *glares at Austin with bright white/blue eyes*

Cera: Let’s continue. How do you protect those you care about? Does it always work?

Ian: I’d do anything to protect those I care about. And Austin wouldn’t be a vampire if things always worked out. For a long time I didn’t let mortals get close to me. Until I joined the FBI. Brad Morris and I hit it off and before I quite knew what was happening we’d become best friends.

Then he set me up with Grace. She soon became the most important thing in my life, but I knew I’d only hurt her. So, I left her to keep her safe. It tore me apart, but I did it to protect her.

Of course, when we met up again in Clayton, I had to keep her close to protect her from the killer, and that was the hardest and easiest thing I’ve ever done. l still had to protect her from me, too. Not so sure I succeeded in t his last part or not.

Cera: Austin, in A Hunter’s Blade you’re a new vampire who is trying to follow Master Pomeroy’s code. How does this struggle make you an alpha hero?

Ian: *chuckles, and Austin glares at him.*

Austin: *rubs the back of his neck* I don’t ever give into the demon inside. Simple as that. I don’t let the monster my sire tried to turn me into out. Not sure what that makes me.

Cera: You protect Brigit even though you weren’t a 100% certain she wasn’t the killer.  Why did you do that?

Austin: Oh, man. That’s a complicated question. I’m not so sure I was thinking beyond my growing feelings for her at that point. I would have walked through hell for her. Still would.

Don’t you have some blurbs or excerpts? I’m not good at answering questions.

Ian: Excellent idea. I’m not much for twenty questions.

A Hunter’s Angel, book 1 of The Hunter’s Daggers Series

Excerpt:

“I’m in love with the man inside the vampire.” Grace moved her hand to thread through his silky hair. When she rested the other over his heart, a soft sigh escaped his lips. Underneath her palm, the slow beat was barely noticeable.

His thumb grazed her cheekbone and slowly trailed down to the hollow of her throat. Her breathing quickened at the zinging anticipation as he caressed the pulse point where he’d claimed to have taken blood from her. He glanced at the spot with eyes as haunted as he sounded. “I’m not a man.”

“But you were once.”

He met her gaze again. “Yes, once.”

His fingers lingered over her pulse. Her heart raced under his touch. She tilted her neck as if his touch awakened some base instinct to offer the sacrifice. “Do you still want my blood?”

Ian stepped away and locked his wide-eyed gaze onto hers. At last, he rasped, “No, I don’t want your blood.

Fear of what she’d wanted him to do tumbled through her. She stepped away, and for a moment, she considered telling him to leave. How did she know any of this was real? She couldn’t imagine she’d ever freely offer a vampire her blood. Did she really believe him? He was sucking her into his insanity. But if this was true and he could make people do things against their will, maybe he could control her feelings.

“Maybe I should go?” Ian backed away another step and headed toward the counter where he’d left his dagger. He turned back to her with the sheath in his hand. Her heart shattered with the knowledge that, if he walked out the front door, she’d never see him again. “Goodbye, my sweet angel.”

His jagged murmur ripped at her soul as his eyes took on a blazing intensity and snared hers. She felt a pressure in her mind, and she knew what he intended to do. He wanted to erase her memories of him.

A Hunter’s Blurb, book 2 of The Hunter’s Daggers Series

Excerpt:

When preternatural power touched her nape, Brigit assumed Bo Reynard was back, which was unusual. He never came in on Wednesdays, the slowest night of the week. Brigit set a margarita before a woman flirting with one of the other regulars at the end of the bar and took the man’s money for the woman’s drink.

After closing the cash drawer, she turned and sucked in a breath. The most beautiful pair of hazel eyes she had ever seen stared back at her from the other end of the bar.

The cowboy vamp removed his hat and set it on the empty stool beside him. Grinning at her, he ran his fingers through his disheveled hair. “Hello, there. I’ll have a glass of red wine,” he said in a voice as smooth as Kentucky bourbon.

She swallowed hard, took a deep breath and earthy spiciness tickled her senses. How did he smell that damned good? He’s supposed to smell like a rotting corpse. “Uh…which one?”

He shrugged with wry amusement playing on his lips. “What was my friend drinking the other night?”

“Syrah…the most expensive red wine I have.”

He pulled his wallet from his back pocket and flipped it open to take out a bill. “I’ll have a glass of that.”

A moment later, she set the glass before him and told him the price.

He handed her a bill and smiled. “Keep the change.” Before she could turn away, he said, “So, how long have you lived here? I’m new in town.”

She narrowed her eyes and crossed her arms. “Yes, I know. You bought the Wagner ranch. Just moved in. Your name is Austin Calhoun.”

He raised an eyebrow and picked up the glass. “Checking up on me?”

“I like to know who all my neighbors are.” She bent closer and hissed, “So when they start dropping dead I know who the prime suspects are.”

He leaned over the edge of the bar, peered deeply into her eyes. The image of him closing the distance and covering her mouth in a kiss zapped through her. His low-pitched voice did nothing to ease the erotic vision.

“Interestingly, I like to know my neighbors for the same reason, Brigit Wolfe, werewolf.” She narrowed her eyes and fisted her hands. His voice dropped even lower as he said, “You didn’t answer my question. How long have you lived in Silver Creek?”

She wanted to turn away, but something in those amazing eyes made her stay, and even more alarming, answer his nosy question. “Almost a year—this time. Why are you here? I know it wasn’t for the wine.”

Straightening his spine, he sipped from the glass and shrugged. “I thought I’d drop in to see you.”

“You’ve seen me, now leave.” She turned away.

Austin snorted. “Not so fast, puppy.”

She faced him with her hands fisted at her sides. “Oh, that’s mature. You think because you’re one of Lucas Pomeroy’s pet bats you’re so much better than the rest of us.”

He smirked and set his glass on the bar. “You do know I can’t turn into a bat, don’t you?”

She rolled her eyes, and he chuckled, infuriating her further.

“I follow a different code of ethics, you could say, than most of the damned and undead.” He looked around.

With only an hour before closing, there were only a handful of people in the place. When he locked those shifting golden-gray-green eyes on hers, she shivered.

“I think we should have a private chat after you close.” The serrated edge of his voice sawed through her. “I have some questions and want to get all the facts straight before I become judge, jury, and executioner.”

A cold lump fell into her stomach, but she fought the urge to run and leaned closer. Her mouth so dry she had to lick her lips to speak. “I’m not the one doing the killing, bloodsucker.”

“Then you shouldn’t mind helping me find out who is.”

Brigit spun away to take an order for a drink. How could she help him find the killer when she wasn’t a hundred percent sure she hadn’t attacked those humans?

What about romance hooks me? Why do I write romance?

This is both easy and hard to answer. The easy part is I’m a sucker for the happily ever after. I want the two people I’ve come to love—the hero whom I’ve fallen in love with right along with the heroine and the heroine whom I love like a sister—to be happy.

The hard part of this is more complicated. There was a time when I didn’t read romance, or not much of it anyway. I had always wanted to be a writer, and my very first book was a romance (I wrote it in high school) and most of the fan fiction I wrote before I decided to take the plunge and write A Hunter’s Angel was romance. But I denied being a romance writer. I’ve since embraced what I am and I what I write, and what I now predominantly read.

I love romance. It’s a part of me. It’s my love of fairy tales. It’s my love for the perfect world where two people are soul mates, and no matter what obstacles they have to overcome, they will always find their way to each other.

In my debut paranormal, A Hunter’s Angel, Ian and Grace had been lovers in the past, but when Ian’s vampire nature threatens her life, he leaves her to protect her from himself. But fate has a way of intervening and now he has to protect her from a more sinister threat.

Gambling On A Secret, my debut contemporary Western, due out in January from Lyrical Press and published under my real name, Charli and Dylan are two lost souls who become whole and better people together. As Charli puts it: They are two ugly worms, caterpillars, who want to turn the ugly in their lives into something beautiful—they want to be butterflies.

What’s the one thing you love about the romance genre?

When she meets Dylan Quinn, Charli is willing to take a chance on the town drunk to help her rebuild the rundown ranch.

Dylan has his demons, too. The former Special Forces commander can’t get past his ex-wife’s betrayal and the botched mission that left him with much more than a bad limp. Certain the greedy oilman next door to Charli wants much more than just her heart, Dylan’s even willing to stop drinking in order to protect her.

When things get dangerous and secrets of the past are revealed, is he only looking out for his new employer, or is she the new start he so desperately needs?

Except:

Dylan moved over to her, grabbed her shoulders and spun her around before he realized what he was doing. Charli stood close enough for him to smell the sweet scent of peaches and see the flecks of blue in her wide green eyes. “I warned you more than once about Ferguson. I won’t let you give him this ranch. I’ll buy it from you first.”

She laughed. “You’ve got to be kidding. You’ll buy the ranch? Hell.”

She bent into the open refrigerator. It wasn’t a secret he was broke, but her easy dismissal pinched his heart in an unfamiliar and uncomfortable way.

Over her shoulder, Charli burned him with the fire of her cat-like eyes. “I don’t really give a flyin’ fu–I don’t care what your deal is with Leon. He’s done nothing to me. He’s a gentleman and only wants to be my friend.” She turned back toward him with a carton of eggs in one hand and a jug of milk in the other. “So, if you can’t accept that, I think you know what you can do. Goes for my rule about your drinking, too. Take it or leave it. The door’s open.”
